Our History

Gull Wings Children’s Museum was founded in 1986 by a small group of dedicated parents and educators in Oxnard, California. The first board of directors met in 1987, and the museum moved into a temporary facility in Downtown Oxnard in 1989. From its founding, Gull Wings has served as Ventura County’s only children’s museum.

The Museum serves 30,000 visitors per year in the approximately 6,000 square foot facility in Downtown Oxnard, and reaches out to an additional 200,000 per year through our “Museum On The Go” program in local schools, festivals, and community events, targeting those who could not otherwise visit the museum in person.

Our growing educational programs include regular story times to promote literacy; arts and crafts to instill a sense of creativity and imaginative thinking; music to encourage natural expression and movement; natural resource exploration; and directed education programs in space exploration, science,  and coastal conservation.

Poised to celebrate its 25th Anniversary in 2012, Gull Wings looks to a bright future as we continue to serve the families of Ventura County and beyond.
